Remake of Wings of Fury
:: RETRO REMAKES COMPETITION 2006::

--- What happened before ---

It is 1943 and the war in pacific is at its height. You are a pilot in the
proud US Navy with your mighty F6F Hellcat ....
After a few weeks without any trace of Japanese forces suddenly the hell broke
lose. The sky was pitch black of enemy planes and the air was full with the
humming of the Mitsubishi motors. The battle was short but fierce and the
result was horrible - all the ships of your fleet were sunk to the ground,
only the hulk of what was once a mighty carrier was floating through the
wreckage. This being the only place to land you took it. On board were no more
than a few planes and lots of weapons but no crew but a mechanic and two other
pilots. Even your odds were worse then ever, you and your tiny group of comrades
started a new campaign against the Japanes empire - founding the squadron called

      --- WINGS OF FURY ---

What is to do:

To finish a level you have to:
    - Kill every soldier on each island
    - Destroy every bunker on each island
    - sink every enemy ship in the area
    - and after that land safely on your carrier and go down the elevator

---How to control the plane:---

Default Controls:

[Up]: Cursor Up
[Down]: Cursor Down
[Left]: Cursor Left
[Right]: Cursor Right
[Fire] [Drop Bomb]:	Left Control
[Fire2][Fire MG]:	Left Shift
[Create a plane]: F6
[Select next plane]:	F5
[Autopilot]: F4

[F1]: Info about the island you are above

---How to fly in few words:---

To let the plane move to a certain direction, press the key of this
direction. So if you want to gain height while flying to the right, press [up] + [right]
or if you want to turn to the left, press [left].
Pressing [up] only will not make you fly straight up, instead it
will begin a slow descent. If your landing gear is closed, the plane will pitch down
a small bit, if your gear is open your nose is pulled up and you begin the
landing approach.

---Little Flight School:---

We begin the lesson in the hangar of our carrier.
Please select the weapon of your choice by pressing [up] or [down].
The options you have are:
- Bombs:
This plane can carry plenty of bombs and they are good against most
Japanese buildings we will fight on the islands and their garrison.
But they are really useless when it goes up against hardened
buildings and most of the ship weapons
- Rockets:
The weapon of your choice to go against buildings made of steel and
concrete. They flay straight away from you and you'll have to aim
good to hit anything on the ground but the dust. The downside is
that the F6 can carry less rockets than bombs.
- Torpedo:
You're up against the Japanese fleet? Don't forget to take one of
those along. Due to their size you are limited to only one torpedo
at a time but they are the only way to sink a ship. Torpedoes are
high-tech weapons so don't drop them from too high or else they will
	 sink just like a stone.

Now press your [fire] button and the elevator will bring you up to the deck.
Now you can see the pride of the Navy - the F6F Hellcat....

Since we are in a training lesson we don't press the [autopilot] button to
take off but do it on our own. To start rolling press the direction you
want to roll to. For starters we want to take off to the right, so press [right].
After a short while your speed should be high enough to bring up the back of
the plane - this is the sign we have enough speed to take off safely - never
try to take off when you are at a low speed, you will crash! The end of the
deck comes nearer and now you have to press [up] and [right] to gain
height as soon as you leave the carrier. - Welcome in the air!

Now we try a turn. To turn around to left just press [left] and the plane
will do a nice turn until it faces the other direction. But as you can see the
plane has lost height and is slowly descending, so you have to pull up
- press [left] and [up] to gain height again and level your plane to even.
If you think you are high enough or just want to have fun try pressing
[down], as you see this will cause the nose of your plane to go down again
until it is nearly points straight to the sea and your plane begins to lose
height even faster than before. Level again before you reach the sea and
crash into it.

So now you know: pressing [left] or [right] will make a turn
to this direction, pressing [down] will start a dive. If you press
[down] + [left] or [down] + [right] you will do a turn while diving.
[up] + [left] or [up] + [right] begins an ascending flight,
taking a turn first if necessary.

Now exercise turning and leveling until you get the grip with it, because now
begins the most difficult part of the lesson: the landing...

Bring you plane to a position on the far left side of your carrier.
Turn the plane right and level at a position so you are slightly higher than
the deck of our carrier. To control your height look at the small
display which shows your plane's view to the front. Now approach the carrier
until you are right before the deck. As you see the landing gear came out.
Now press [up] to pull the nose of the fighter up and begin a slow descent -
stay in this position until you hit the deck and begin rolling. If you landed
on the far left side of your carrier the plane will be stopped quickly by the
ropes. If you missed them you'll have to brake manually. Wait until
the plane stops moving (pressing [left] helps decelerating) and then
direct it onto the elevator again.

Press [fire] to go down to the hangar.

Well done

---Firing:---

To release a bomb/rocket/torpedo just press [fire], then you can see the
weapon leave your plane. To fire your MG to hit enemy planes in air or
soldiers on the ground press [fire2].

To replenish your weapons or choose a different main weapon just land on
the carrier and go down into the hanger again.

---The Enemy:---

Barracks:
Enemy soldiers waiting for their duty on the AA-guns are staying here.
Everytime an AA-gun is destroyed one soldier leaves his barracks to rearm it.
If you destroy a barracks all soldiers will leave the ruins to search cover in
 the sandsacks of an AA-gun.
Destroyed by: bombs, rockets, torpedos

AA-guns:
Sandsack bunkers which give little protection to the soldiers in them but
are armed with a mighty AA-machinegune. If you destroy an AA-gun the troops
will leave it, searching for better cover. But they are rebuild as soon as
new soldiers reach it.
Destroyed by: bombs, rockets, torpedos

Soldiers:
They live in the barracks on the islands and arm the AA-guns. They can only
be attacked while they are without cover.
Killed by: bombs, rockets, torpedos, MG

Concrete bunkers:
Monsters made of concrete and steel, armed with a deadly machine gun and
immune to ordinary bombs. The only good thing about them is once they are
destroyed, they stay ruins
Destroyed by: rockets

Mitsubishi A6M Zero
The Japanese plane in this theater of war. They are mainly used as
interceptors to cover Japanese islands, but sometimes they start armed with
 torpedos to attack our ships.
Destroying a torpedo-carrying Zero has highest priority!
Destroyed by: MG

Ships:
The Japanese fleet is represented by a huge number of different ships, from
tanker to huge aircraft carriers in this sector. Nearly every ship has
weaponry, most of those is covered by thick steel plates only our best
rockets can penetrate. Those weapons are used as AA and to protect the ship
against incoming torpedoes. So if you want do sink a ship be sure to destroy
its defense first.
Destroyed by: torpedos

---Notes on accessability:---

The complete game can be played by using the mouse or an equivalent device
without the need for clicking. In the menus just hovering above an item
will select it after few seconds.
To use the mouse during the game you have to enable it in the controls menu.
controlling the plane is done by moving the mouse to the appropriate area of
the HUD circle. So moving the mouse to a field on the left side will do the
same as pressing the [left] button. Firing the weapons is done either in the
inner circle or on the outer circles where the inner circle (blue) is for MG
and the outer circle (red) for bombs.

---Difficulties:---

Very Easy:
- Loads of weapons, oil, fuel
- you can drop torpedos from very great height
- HUD icons tell you if you can drop a torpedo safely
- 2 point defenses on each side of your carrier
- your MGs hit far better than the enemy's
- your bombs and rockets explode at maximum range
- islands have minimal garrison
- you may only play top level 5 on very easy

- 1 point defense on each side of you carrier
- your MGs hit better than the enemy's
- your bombs and rockets explode at a greater range
- islands have small garrison
- you may only play top level 7 on easy

Normal:
- normal weapons, oil, fuel
- you can drop torpedos from normal height
- your MGs hit as good as the enemy's
- your bombs and rockets explode at normal range
- islands have standard garrison
- you can reach every level

Hard:
- reduced weapons, oil, fuel
- you can drop torpedos from below normal height
- your MGs hit worse than the enemy's
- your bombs and rockets explode at reduced range
- islands have increased garrison
- you can reach every level

Very Hard:
- very few weapons, oil, fuel

- you can reach every level

Have Fun

---About the authors:---

Three of the authors, Gregor, Ulf, Florian, are students of
Technoinformatik, a cross over of computer sience (sic!) and
electrical engineering. With much time in the semester pause we
decided to take on this classic gem of gaming.

The result isn't completely what we wanted it to be, thus
because the plenty amounts of time we thought to have turned out to be the
minimum of what was needed. The fourth member of the team, Kathrin,
student of something with music, is the artist behind this great cover version
of the original tune. - We all are gratefull for her patience with
our ideas on how to play it "better".

---About the missing stuff:---

The things we couldn't achieve but wanted to:

- playable as Japanese pilot, starting from islands,
    destroying the US Navy

- better, more like ships looking ship models, especially the
    bridge and different cannons.
to be honest, the ship models are only placeholders. sorry for that.

- those two little guys on your carrier directing you to the lift

- and a bit of extra polish so the game looks and feels better.

.... But rest assured, all these things will come!
